Local SEO guide for U.S. small businesses
For most U.S. service businesses, the three results in Google's map pack capture the majority of clicks for "near me" searches. Local SEO is the work that puts you there. It is methodical, unglamorous, and it compounds.
Start with Google Business Profile
Your profile is a ranking asset, not a directory listing. Google rewards profiles that are complete, active and consistent with your website.
- βPick the most specific primary category, then add secondary ones.
- βWrite a description that names your services and city naturally.
- βAdd real photos monthly β interiors, team, completed work.
- βFill service and product sections with the terms customers search.
- βPost updates at least twice a month.
- βAnswer questions in the Q&A section yourself.
NAP consistency across the web
Name, address and phone must match character for character everywhere: your site footer, Google, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp, BBB, industry directories and your social profiles. Inconsistent listings split your authority and confuse Google about which business is real.
Use one format and never vary it. "Suite 200" and "Ste. 200" should not both exist.
Reviews are a ranking factor and a conversion factor
Volume, recency, rating and keyword content in reviews all matter. A steady trickle beats a burst of twenty reviews in one week, which looks manipulated.
- βAsk every satisfied customer, at the moment of satisfaction.
- βSend a direct review link by text β friction kills response rates.
- βReply to every review, positive and negative, within 48 hours.
- βNever buy reviews; Google filters them and can suspend profiles.
Build city and service-area pages properly
One page per city you genuinely serve, each with unique content: local projects, local testimonials, local landmarks, driving directions, and specifics about that market. Copy-pasted pages with the city name swapped are treated as doorway pages and can hurt you.
If you serve fifteen towns, build pages for the five that matter commercially and do them well.
Technical local signals
Add LocalBusiness schema with your address, hours, geo coordinates, service area and phone. Embed a Google map on the contact page. Make sure your phone number is a tappable link on mobile and your site loads in under 2.5 seconds β mobile searchers on the go do not wait.
